why I have chosen openings.
I have chosen openings because as soon as I saw it I had ideas of what to do and how I could approach the project. And I think that theres a good opportunity be creative with this option. Photographers like Lee Friedlander and Andreas Gursky have also taken inspiration from the theme above is an example of Andreas Gurskys work as each window could be and individual opening.
Mind maps of openings
Lee Friedlander. Is an American photographer and artist in the 1960's / 70's who mainly 35mm black and white film.
He did a series of images based on openings where he took photos out of windows for example car windows. One of his
images is in the mindmap above. Photographers that have also used a theme of openings include dragon todorovic he
took images through windows and doors that had a dark lighting. Also I saw sungseok ahn in the Sony photographic
competition I thought his photos looked like openings as it was a photo inside a photo that I thought opened up into a
different time.

These are my examples of openings images i took around school.
I think this is my best image because it is composed well and I like the differences in light and it sort of has layers as you can see each floor and railings and I like the way the light is shining of each letter differently. It would be even better if it was more focused when its enlarged and if it was taken outside of school at a different location a bit more interesting.
The images I took would be even better if I taken different types of images maybe less obvious ones not just open doors and windows. And look for openings in things other than buildings and architecture.
My second attempt at taking photos in school is similar to the first and I need to begin taking more photos outside of school if I want to see any improvement in my photos and my for my website to have a more varied range of photos. However on some of the photos I used light to represent openings on the photos of the link with lots of spots of light coming through openings on the link.
photo experiments outside of school
At home and while I was outside I trialled different ideas. for example some photos were just of openings for example windows and open doors. I also trialled the idea of using painting with light and putting images inside light painted boxes inspired by the photos I saw at the Sony photographic competition. Aswell as that I used the idea of trying to get the effect of a strobe light by flashing on and off lights as I opened things like doors and other objects. I also had the idea of doing a sort of time lapse where I photo a door of a long period of time and then layer them all on top of each other so the door and people opening it all blend into one image. And a while ago I also took images inspired by Lee Friedlander by taking photos from inside the car outside the window using my phone. you could also use light to represent openings whether your looking in or out.
Evaluation. So far my favourite images I have taken are the ones of the sunset through the windows , because they were the most successful and look the nicest however I still need to make a concept for those photos I have some ideas about looking in and out of windows as well as light and reflection. inspired by Lee Friedlander and other photographers like Andreas Gursky working on the theme of windows. The photos of the doors didn't come as successful as I would have liked however theres still some work I can do on it but I would have also like to be able to see what comes out of the other side of the door. I also have had ideas on the theme of a image within a image whether it is from reflection or maybe photoshopped in for example photo shop an image through the basketball hoop i photoed earlier or even drawing shapes with painting with light and then warping images to fit inside those shapes. I hope to be able to develop all these ideas into a range of final images before the end of the project over the summer.
photos of reflections and windows.
Some of these images i took specifically for the theme however most of these were images i had already taken that i thought i could use for the project because they fitted with the theme openings whether through light , reflections or windows.
Dalston anatomy.
This is a photography exhibition by Lorenzo Vitturi who Is a italian born photographer and artist Who lives in Dalston. which shows examples of pictures he felt reflected by the cosmopolitan community of Dalston examples shown below:
The images above are similar tot that of the human form and are photographed in such a way that they appear life size. They fit in with all of the themes we are using for this project. The theme openings is seen in this as the idea of anatomy and dissecting Dalston and its community opening it up and looking inside of it, Also the way the objects in the sculptures have been cut open. disguise is seen also in the images were peoples faces a covered in what looks like coloured pastels. The video below shows Lorenzo Vitturis own opinion of his piece and explain the ideas behind it. The mind map below is a mind map of my initial thoughts after watching the video.
We are going on a trip to the photographers gallery tomorrow to see the exhibition " Dalston Anatomy " on tuesday the 30th of september. Below is the route we are planning on taking to get there and back.
Initial idea for the final piece.
The final piece will have a few different images added to it and will be displayed basically the same but i will hopefully have 2 or 3 sets of these images with different focuses like openings through transport , openings through light and then just a selection of other images that fit the theme and i want to use i should hopefully be able to complete this in 2 or 3 lessons.
Trip to the photographers Gallery.
These photos show the journey to the gallery and some of the images of pictures and displays from inside the photographers gallery where we saw the Lorenzo Viturri exhibition as well as an exhibition on Russian Photography. I think i am going to use some of these images in my final piece as they match my theme of openings either through windows and in transport of the trains for . for example the images through the train station barriers and the images of the tinted train windows could be used in openings in transport. One of my favourite images is the 6th image as I like how it not really that clear what the images is of it also fits the theme of openings as its taken through a window with reflected windows in the background.
Ideas on display for my final piece.
I have had a few initial ideas on how to display my final piece whether to print them off in a grid or row display or print them as single images and then put them into a grid or row using clips hanging them from the wall. Or whether I could display them in a window frame kind of format linking to the theme openings. I looked to the Thomas Tallis pinterest board for ideas and inspiration on how to present my final ideas and displays that I like even if i couldn't use them. I liked the idea of displaying my images like this by clipping them together while they are on the wall as that keeps them as separate images but if you look at them together they are still like the grid image i produced on photoshop but it makes them a bit more interesting, I also like the idea of displaying the images in a row with or without frames. The image on the right is my favourite however i wont be able to do that if i could that would be my choice. Because as you walk through it it takes you from one image to the next and all you have to focus on is the images.
Final pieces.
Evaluation
I chose openings as my theme because I had ideas of what I could do straight away and could think of lots of lots of chances to take photos that fit the theme of openings. I started my research using by making a mind map with photographers who had taken images that fitted the theme of openings. I then did further research into the photographers who had taken them for example lee freidlander. Some of my initial ideas included trying to use a strobe light affect to photograph a door opening as well as taking images through openings like windows. I further developed my ideas by evaluating my work and seeing where I could improve my images and adapt my ideas also using the school pinterest to improve my ideas and images. So far my best idea has been the theme of openings through transport for taking images out of train and car windows then presenting the images in a row blurred together almost depicting the journey itself. To refine the quality of my work i used photoshop to edit my images and put a tint on my final images and to display them in the style they have been blending in with each other. The colour I used first (the green) was a lot more effective and improved the image where as the image with the black tint when printed did not work at all. The initial idea of how to display my final piece changed from the 3 by 3 square of images into the final piece . Which was a row of images that over lapped and blended together to give the idea of the beginning and end of the journey.
